Innocence Project

Help stop a law that has serious consequences to those who have been sentenced to death in Florida. Florida Governor Rick Scott is considering the so-called “Timely Justice Act,” a bill that would dramatically speed up the state's execution process, even while a prisoner might still have a strong claim of innocence to present to the courts. For a state that leads the nation in the number of people sentenced to death but later exonerated to even consider this legislation is deeply troubling. If Governor Scott signs this bill into law, it would be devastating to the people on Florida’s death row who are fighting to prove their innocence.

Join us in calling on Governor Scott to veto the Timely Justice Act and ensure that those wrongfully convicted of capital crimes in Florida have time to appeal their executions!TO SIGN, GO TO: http://www.capwiz.com/innocenceproject/issues/alert/?alertid=62678176&type=CU

Twenty four people have been exonerated after being sentenced to death in Florida, including Frank Lee Smith, who died in prison before DNA testing proved him innocent and posthumously cleared his name. Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, there has been nearly one exoneration for every three executions carried out in Florida. That level of error is astounding and points to why this bill is so misguided.

It makes no sense for a state that has so often gotten it wrong in capital punishment cases to speed up the process, which is already riddled with deadly mistakes. When the state sentences someone to death, that person deserves every opportunity to prove their innocence. Please contact Florida Governor Rick Scott and urge him to veto the “Timely Justice Act” today!

Sincerely,

Maddy deLone
