Dear Colleagues:

Certain proposals in/for the Senate Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill, about inadmissibility/deportability for domestic violence offenses (including violations of protection orders),  actually threaten to have harsh consequences for immigrant survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and we’re asking for your endorsements on a sign-on letter to flag these serious concerns for Senators (some of your organizations signed on to a similar letter during the reauthorization process around VAWA).

The sign-on letter is attached or you can access it by clicking here.  Please add your organization’s endorsement by clicking here.

These proposals will come up in the context of Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR), as the Senate Judiciary Committee will start the amendment process next week, and we need to be prepared because things may move very fast.

We will likely reach out repeatedly to you over the next 4 weeks that will be packed with CIR hearings to help us oppose or mitigate negative proposals, or support and advance positive proposals, so that we can ensure that the needs of immigrant survivors are taken into account in CIR – so please bear with us and stay tuned!

Sign-ons are due by 5:00 pm ET on Tuesday, May 7th, 2013 (but please continue to send in endorsements even after that initial cut-off, since we may have multiple opportunities to leverage the letter as this process moved forward).

And please share this sign-on letter widely with your own networks!  For more information, contact Jeanne Smoot with the Tahirih Justice Center at jeanne@tahirih.org or Cecelia Levin with ASISTA Immigration Assistance at cecelia@asistahelp.org.

Thank you for your support and all you do to help survivors of violence.
