Voter ID laws unfairly target Dem

supporters

David Spaulding’s letter about voter ID reflects the experience of someone living in suburban New Jersey. He apparently doesn’t realize that everyone doesn’t have a car, doesn’t travel and doesn’t have a credit card.
There are many people in this country who live paycheck to paycheck. They have no need for a credit card. Some of them don’t have bank accounts of any kind. Many rely on public transportation so getting to the places where the proper form of government ID can be obtained costs time from their job and money for a fare. This is essentially a poll tax — requiring people to pay for the right to vote.
He should check out the voter ID laws proposed/passed in North Carolina and other states where student picture IDs are no longer considered valid (but a gun license is!). That’s not an attempt to deal with voter impersonation (which has been proven to be miniscule); it’s an attempt to prevent the “wrong” people from voting, i.e. those who might vote for Democrats.
What possible use are the many new laws passed since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act — eliminating early voting, eliminating voting on Sundays and moving voting districts to out of the way places? Again, just an attempt to keep certain people from voting.
I’m sure our Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves at the naked political partisanship exhibited in these actions. There is nothing more un-American than trying to deny people the right to vote.
